Project goals
We aimed to inspire customers to utilize badges as a recognition system within their learning community, acknowledging users' various achievements and contributions. From posing insightful questions to showcasing exceptional performance, badges celebrate accomplishments and promote a culture of appreciation and motivation.
This initiative aimed to:
- Align the badge experience with the design system.
- Reimagine the organization and custom badge designs.
- Enhance team selection, and streamline the badge creation and awarding process for a more intuitive and engaging experience.
UX research & insights
Our research showed that while badges primarily serve as tools for social recognition, some organizations utilize them to acknowledge course and curriculum completion. This insight emphasizes the need for flexibility in badge usage, particularly for learning and development teams implementing gamification to enhance engagement.
Awarding badges
Considering that academies can include thousands of members, I enhanced the awarding experience with advanced filtering options for accurate selection. When recipients are chosen, the selected badge becomes active, signaling it is ready to be awarded.
Clicking "Award Badge" initiates a confirmation animation, developed in collaboration with the Design Systems team, to provide a satisfying and refined interaction.
Badge management
Previously, managing badges—categorized as Default, Company, and Group—required navigating separate views. I proposed a unified management interface with filtering capabilities that would allow users to seamlessly access and organize all badge types in one place.
Custom badge creation
Customers can upload their own images or design custom badges using a selection of colors, textures, and icons. Working closely with our illustrator, Jacob Pinson, I crafted a flexible design system that maintained the sleek, minimalist aesthetic of academy badges while enabling personalization.
The impact
Given that academies can comprise thousands of members, I refined the awarding experience with advanced filtering options for precise selection.
"The user interface [of Schoox] seemed friendly. [Schoox] shared that they're about to update their user interface to a more modern version. So I think that's a plus ... It looked very user-friendly from the learner's perspective as far as [being] pleasing and somewhat intuitive ..."
"When seeing [Schoox] ... it just seemed light years ahead of the other one we were looking at in terms of look and feel and the customization of it. It felt very modern, very easy to use, and something that our employees would want to go to."
