New badge experience

Project goals
Besides aligning this experience with the current design system, our team's goal was to encourage customers to engage more with badges as a recognition system. They are used to acknowledge a teammate's various achievements and contributions.
From asking insightful questions to demonstrating outstanding performance, badges act as a tool to recognize achievements and foster a culture of appreciation and motivation within the team.

UX research & insights
Most learning and development clients showed interest in using gamification, such as badges, to motivate team members and encourage them to complete predefined learning qualifications.
One customer's use of badges revealed a situation where an organization mainly awards badges for course and curriculum completion, rather than as a social tool. It's essential to remember that organizations can utilize badges in various reward systems.

Navigating badge types
A customer can award badges directly from the Badge creation and management experience. From here, you can choose to award Default, Company, or Groups badges to individuals or to all people who meet certain organizational criteria.
Initially, you could only manage these badges in their own views. I suggested adding the ability to see all badge types in a single view. This view can then be filtered to display specific badge types if needed.

New badge style
The new direction for the academy badges, created by the illustrator Jacob Pinson, is sleek and minimalistic.
I designed a new default badge that maintains the same aesthetic as the academy badges and is flexible enough for customization.

Creating custom badges
Custom badges can be created by uploading an image, letting AI find one for you, or building a badge using various color, texture, and icon presets.

Filtering individuals and groups
Considering that academies can have thousands of members, rethinking the process of selecting the right individuals or groups was a major challenge. I improved the advanced filtering options to display your selections more intuitively.

Awarding badges
Once you have selected team members or criteria, the badge lights up to indicate it is ready to be awarded.
Clicking "Award Badge" triggers a confirmation animation, developed in collaboration with the Design Systems team, to deliver a satisfying and polished interaction.

The impact
All the experience enhancements to the Badge experience resulted in increased team engagement for our customers. Sports Clips successfully utilizes Schoox's new badge experience and praises it, along with other gamification features.
Sports Clips developed a “level up” system where team members can participate in training activities to earn badges at five levels. These badges can be customized; the fifth level marks an individual as a “certified manager.”
“Our team members enjoy healthy competition, earning badges, and receiving recognition for training they’ve completed.”
